As well as the famous lakes there are a wealth of castles, museums, places to interest and quaint country pubs serving real ale.

In the neighboring village is The Highland Drove which has recently won the northern pub of the year award. In the village of Melmerby is The Village Bakery that serves wonderful lunches and sells their organic breads to Waitrose. Penrith is well known for its charming specialist shops, the famous Toffee Shop is ideal for presents to take home, it also sells fudge that is "easily the best in the world" (Lord Lichfield).

When you need a break from sightseeing and activities the private Estate is ideal for tranquil walks, nature watching and idyllic evenings spent sitting by the lakes.The gardens also offer a peaceful retreat for croquet and relaxing by the fountain.

Children are very welcome at Bracken Bank Lodge. There is a very wide range of entertainment ideas on our Childrens page. They may like to visit Beatrix Potter's house and Hadrian's Wall. In Penrith the children's quad bike rides and pottery sessions are always popular. Pony trekking around Lake Ullswater is highly recommended. A visit to Lake Windermere may inspire them to read Swallows and Amazons.
