Days out

Penrith. This historic market town is renowned for its wealth of specialist shops. The Toffee Shop is the perfect place to buy gifts to take home, the fudge that is also made on the premises is totally irresistible.

Druid's Stone Circles. There are some 50 stone circles in Cumbria, including some of the earliest stone circles in Britain. There is a vast range of types, from the vast monumental circles at Castlerigg, Swinside and Long Meg, to the standard early bronze age circles of about 100 ft in diameter as at Casterton and Elva Plain.

Long Meg and her Daughters, near Lazonby. A Bronze Age stone circle, linked with fascinating local legends. One of the finest stone circles in the north of England, the circle has a diameter of about 350 feet, the second biggest in the country. Long Meg is the tallest of the 69 stones, about 12 feet high, with three mysterious symbols, its four corners facing the points of the compass and standing some 60 feet outside the circle. The stones probably date from about 1500 BC, and it was likely to have been used as a meeting place or for some form of religious ritual. Long Meg is made of local red sandstone, whereas the daughters are boulders of rhyolite, a form of granite. William Wordsworth wrote 'Next to Stonehenge it is beyond dispute the most notable relic that this or probably any other country contains.'
Drive through Lazonby to Kirk Oswald, turn right past the church and drive towards Little Salkeld. The Stone Circle is signposted along this road.

Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick. One of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain, and is the most visited stone circle in Cumbria. Every year thousands of people visit it to look, photograph, draw and wonder why and when and by whom it was built. The stone circle is on the level top of a low hill with views across to Skiddaw, Blencathra and Lonscale Fell.
